We're excited to be hosting the second play-test of Aotearoa: Contact and Tiriti, an original historical mega-game designed by Arcturus Trail.

The first play-test was a fantastic success, and Arcturus has been refining the game based on player feedback. Now we're looking for another group of players to help shape it before its public release.

If you enjoy strategy, negotiation, history, roleplaying, or just trying something completely different, we'd love to have you join us.

What a fantastic day!

Yesterday we hosted our first playtest of Aotearoa: Contact and Tiriti, and despite having a smaller group of around a dozen players, the experience exceeded all expectations.

With our player count we focused on just the North Island, but even that map almost filled the entire classroom! We had a wonderful mix of teenagers and adults, and after nearly five hours of strategy, negotiation, roleplay and discussion, the overwhelming response was:

“When can we do it again?”

Huge congratulations to Arc for creating such an incredibly detailed and engaging experience. The amount of thought that’s gone into the game is remarkable. I particularly loved playing the British Museum, and seeing how organisations like the Bank of England and Australia have been woven into the wider historical picture.

Perhaps the most rewarding part of the day wasn’t the game itself, but the conversations it inspired. Watching people from different backgrounds calmly explore the opportunities, tensions and challenges of Aotearoa between 1820 and 1860 was genuinely inspiring. There were plenty of those “aha!” moments, especially from some of our younger players. It’s also clear how much care has gone into presenting this period respectfully, with strong cultural guidance throughout the game’s development.

We’ll almost certainly be running another playtest in a couple of months. With more players we’re hoping to bring the entire map of New Zealand to life and introduce some of Arc’s exciting experimental expansions.

If you joined us yesterday, we’d love to hear your thoughts. What was your favourite moment? What role did you play?

And if you missed out, would you be interested in joining the next playtest? Let us know in the comments!

My own game of Dark Gothic was less successful… the forces of darkness (Peter) won. 😅
