SUMMARY:Aotearoa: Contact and Tiriti - Mega-Game Experience
DESCRIPTION:Aotearoa: Contact and Tiriti\nMegagame Playtest Experience \nRegister to play:https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfSkkEuYLzxy1oBv4sFWwGvRnBHjc3Qh1PF4NbztNWH0fddMA/viewform?usp=publish-editor \nStep into a pivotal moment in Aotearoa’s history and take part in a large-scale\, interactive experience unlike anything else in Christchurch. \nAotearoa: Contact and Tiriti is a megagame — a hybrid of board game\, roleplay\, and social simulation — where 20–100 players come together to explore the period of early contact between Māori and Pākehā communities (circa 1820–1860). \n\nWhat is a Megagame?\nMegagames are large\, immersive experiences where players work in teams\, take on roles\, and interact within a shared system that evolves in real time. \nYou’ll be part of a community navigating a changing world — making decisions\, forming alliances\, and responding to the actions of others. \nExpect a mix of: \n\n\nStrategy and resource management \n\n\nNegotiation\, trade\, and diplomacy \n\n\nConflict and cooperation between teams \n\n\nRoleplay and decision-making under pressure \n\n\nNo prior experience is needed — the game is designed to be learned as you play. \n\nGet a Feel for the Experience\nIf you’re new to megagames or want a sense of both the experience and themes\, these videos are a great introduction: \nWhat is a megagame like? \n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hN71v9H_gg8 \n\n\nThemes and historical context: \n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmGdmLW2HTo \n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDwH2fMsJa8 \n\n\n\nThe Experience\nPlayers take on roles such as rangatira\, tohunga\, missionaries\, traders\, and community leaders during a time of rapid cultural\, economic\, and technological change. \nWorking in teams\, you will: \n\n\nProvide for your population and grow your community \n\n\nTrade goods and build relationships with other groups \n\n\nNavigate disputes and seek resolution — through diplomacy or conflict \n\n\nRespond to shifting population dynamics and new opportunities \n\n\nEvery decision contributes to a shared story that unfolds across the room. \nThe experience concludes with a facilitated reflection\, allowing players to unpack what happened and connect it back to the historical context. \n\nEvent Details\nDate: Saturday 27 JuneTime: 9:00am start (please arrive a little early)Duration: Approximately 3–5 hoursLocation: Climate Action Campus\, 180 Avonside DriveCost: FreeAge: 14+ \n\nWho Should Attend?\nThis experience is open to: \n\n\nBoard gamers and strategy enthusiasts \n\n\nRoleplayers and creative thinkers \n\n\nStudents\, educators\, and history enthusiasts \n\n\nAnyone curious to try something different \n\n\nNo prior experience with megagames or roleplaying is required. \n\nImportant Notes\n\n\nThis is a playtest event\, and your feedback will help shape the future of the game. \n\n\nThe experience explores a significant and sometimes sensitive period of Aotearoa’s history and is designed to encourage thoughtful engagement. \n\n\nSpaces are limited to 20–100 players. Registrations will close when full or one week prior to the event.
